How I Will Use My Portfolio to Help Become a Digital Leader

In this ever changing digital world in which we live, an e-portfolio can assist in the development of becoming a digital leader.  After viewing many e-portfolio examples, this is a great platform for capturing ideas and sharing the ideas with others.  One way I can begin is through the implementation of a blog.  The blog can capture all the content and information for followers to see.  Just as in this course, the blog can be embedded into the e-portfolio to share with others.

Additionally, I plan to use the e-portfolio for career purposes.  The portfolio will also be used to showcase my experiences with technology implementation in various settings. It will provide me with the opportunity to manage and organize my learning and experiences towards becoming a digital leader.  Finally, my e-portfolio will be a tool for critical reflection and learning purposes that will provide collective learning and sharing of knowledge with others.

Engagement in Learning Community

During this course I have spent the past few weeks engaging in on-line learning communities.  I followed @TeachThought  and learned valuable information on multiple ways teachers can utilize technology in the classroom.  One particular podcast I watched was titled:Coming to Terms With the 21st Century Classroom. If you are interested in viewing, please click on the following URL:
This podcast provides research and tips on keeping up with technology use of technology in classrooms.

I was also able to find helpful resources on TeachThought website.  One article that captured my interest was  Alternatives to Letter Grades in Education.  This article provide 12 ways to give alternative letter grades for students.  Click on the following link for more information: http://teachthought.com/pedagogy/12-alternatives-to-letter-grades-in-education

Should You Use an E-Portfolio?

The answer is YES!  Utilizing an e-portfolio allows the learner to showcase their work.   Artifacts are kept in a digital format and one is able to reflect back on their work as well.  Simply put . . . a portfolio is a digital tool that demonstrates meaningful connections.
E-portfolios allow you to create a platform to showcase your work to future employers.  Future employers can examine what you have done, the way you learned and your job capabilities. For instance, prior to the new principal appraisal system, we had our district’s principal appraisal system.    This system required us to present what’s called “The State of the Campus.” We had to showcase our work.  At first, I struggled with how to do this, until I came across an article on e-portfolios.  After reading the article, I created an e-portfolio to showcase various skills and experiences I had implemented on my campus.  As a result, my director was able to examine my job experiences and work in a more authentic way.  Additionally, as I created the e-portfolio, I was able to explore deeper learning about the various aspects of my job responsibilities.

Learning "Take Aways" from E-portfolio Viewing

This week I have the opportunity to view examples of e-portfolios.  I obtained so much information and clarity on what you should include in an e-portfolio.  The teacher and principal  e-portfolio piqued my interest.  One in particular was Sean Robinson’s portfolio.  It was very detailed  content and truly reflects his interests.  I never truly understood what you should/should not include in a portfolio.  After viewing several this week, I’ve seen a range of information from resumes, learner goals, curriculum standards/strategies, videos about your interests, artifacts, etc. I also like the variety of content presented in their portfolios.  In my opinion it makes the portfolio more engaging. Overall, it has been a helpful experience for me and provide me with more ideas on what I could include in my portfolio.  I'm excited to see what I can come up with.

Who Owns the E-Portfolio????

This week I have been working on editing my e-portfolio based on feedback I have received from my classmates.  I am working diligently to make my e-portfolio easier to  navigate and more user friendly.  I don't how it is working out, but I will have more feedback that will assist with this. :) While working on this project, I am also reflecting on the question, "Who Owns the E-portfolio?"  This has been a thought provoking question for me and leads me to the following thoughts.

Throughout the EdTech program, I have been given some control of my e-portfolio.  I believe I have had the opportunity to explore certain technology platforms in the course.  However, I also had to ensure I included every assignment/details in the portfolio to receive credit for the assignment.  I decided on the program, resources, etc. that I wanted to use.  However, there were still guidelines to follow.  So when answering the question, “Who Owns the Eportfolio?” I feel I have owned it to a certain extent.

Gardner Campbell (2009) recommends moving away from the template-driven assignments and give students the selection of tools to use and allow students to make those meaningful connections.  I struggled with this because I have chosen tools that I’m confident in using, but I often wonder if this is the tool/resource that my instructor feels is best to use.  The article also states the student must have ownership of ideas that lead to deeper learning.  When students are reflecting on their own ideas, this is when one is able to make meaningful connections. Thibodeaux (2015) states students should not only be given choice, ownership, voice and agency (COVA) over their digital domain, but also the same must be given over their ideas.  In my opinion, when this happens, the student becomes the owner of the E-portfolio.

Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset

During this week, I had the opportunity to develop a Growth Mindset Plan.  The plan I developed focused on cultivating a growth mindset culture in schools.  I chose to implement the plan in phases:

Phase I: Leadership Training
Phase II: Faculty and Staff Training
Phase III: Training for Families
Phase IV: Training for Stakeholders

Each phase focuses on a plan for developing the growth mindset campus wide.  In Phase I, the campus leader will be exposed to training and resources to implement on the campus at all levels.
Phase II teacher training will be provided.  Teachers also have access to materials and resources on line and off line, including professional learning opportunities.  Training for families, Phase III, provide parents with on-line instructional units and off-line classroom activities to use at home with their students.  Resources are also available in English and Spanish.  Finally, Phase IV will provide training for all growth mindset stakeholders utilizing the materials within the Mindset Works.

The intent is to implement the program on my campus and help move away from a fixed mindset in individuals.  With the phases in place, I believe this will help everyone to easily adapt and adjust from fixed to growth mindsets over time.
